Since the conflict in Sudan began in April 2023, there have been massive population movements into South Sudan, Chad and other neighboring countries, both refugees and people returning to their homes of origin. This displacement crisis has been further compounded by the declaration of famine in five locations across Sudan in late 2024 with additional areas predicted to be impacted by early 2025. Nearly 2 million people fleeing the crisis have sought refuge in South Sudan and Chad.
Oxfam and partners are providing clean water, promoting public health, installing emergency drinking water systems, toilets, and bathing facilities, and distributing food and cash so that families can self-select the additional items they may need. We are also providing women with dignity kits, which include essential items like soap, underwear, menstrual items, and a solar-powered flashlight to support their safety at night. As people continue to pour into Sudan’s neighboring countries, much more assistance will be needed to meet the urgent needs of the displaced in this overlooked crisis.
